CREAM (SOUR) RISES TO THE TOP

Today's Waterloo Region Record advises us of a groundbreaking conviction in the U.S. It wasn't just the pedophile that went to jail it was the authority figure within the Catholic Church who covered up for the priest. The title of the story is "Catholic official goes to prison for how he handled abuse claims". Well now that certainly puts a different perspective upon authority figures within churches and schools who think that they can play god with childrens' lives. It should be obvious that these figures whether monsignors, cardinals or Board Superintendants are nothing but criminals covering up criminal behaviour within their midst so as to protect their own dirty little reputations.

The obvious comparison here in Waterloo Region would be the Waterloo Region District School Board and the Ron Archer case. Mr. Archer was convictewd of sexually abusing children including the original complainant one Michael Schmidt. At trial, court was advised as to how well known Mr.Archer's behaviour was and how long he got away with it. He got away with it by the complicity and assistance of senior officials at the WRDSB. The method was so blatant a derogatory phrase was coined for it, namely passing the trash. I suggest that senior management at the WRDSB who had involvement with the Archer case might want to put their affairs in order. Maybe the interest south of the border to make "enablers" of pedophiles accountable just might spread to Canada. I've got two or three names in mind from the WRDSB who have had a lot to say about parents behaviour while they've been actively protecting child abusers in their employ. Those hypocrites need both removal and prosecution.

  1. Ronald Archer was only convicted of sexually abusing one person, Michael Schmidt, and in my opinion the WRDSB was negligent, but the bottom line is it was Ronald Archer that committed the crimes, he is who is responsible. The WRDSB knew that Ron Archer was a problem teacher, but at the same time they didn't know that he was an active pedophile, suspicion is not grounds to fire an employee, he could have turned around and sued the WRDSB for ruining his career. Get your facts straight, thank you.

    1. I was one of Ron Archer's students. His behaviour including his sexual assaults of young boys was well known by some colleagues and administration. The school board had a file on him. Ultimately a former principal at the same school lost his license after it was found that he was complicit in allowing Archer's behaviour to carry on. You should get your facts right.

  2. Is this an attempt to rewrite history and let either the WRDSB or even the teachers'union off the hook? Archer was convicted in October 2000 for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, sexual assault with a weapon and uttering death threats against one Michael Schmidt, a minor. The abuse went on for years and involved over 200 incidents with this one child alone. Ronald Archer was repeatedly transferred from school to school with new complaints of his behaviour towards boys and girls following him from school to school. Teachers, principals and Board staff all knew about his behaviour and only a very few were brave enough to confront him or the Board. Mr. Archer ruined his own career and damaged many young lives along the way. The WRDSB should hang their heads in shame and you should get your facts straight.

  3. Does anyone know where this man lives now? My friend and I know a man named Ron Archer in our town and his suspicious behavior is making us worry that he is the same man who committed this crime. He goes to the same gym as we do, and he is there every single time we are there, no matter what time of day. We change our workout schedule every week, and he is still there every time. He seems to be watching us all the time, and as soon as we go into the change room to change, he follows us in and talks to us while getting undressed. His gym membership is registered under the name "Ron Archer", so we researched his name and found out about this crime. Any information that anyone can provide us would be appreciated. It could just be a coincidence, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

    1. Read what he was convicted of here. This is not a man to find yourself alone with. Adolescent boys are particularly vulnerable. He has a history of pickout out vulnerable boys and making a project of them. I'm astonished that as a convicted sex offendor, he is still at it. Description: He is in his late '60s or early 70s now. A tall man. Quite attractive. Fit. To be absolutely clear, he held a gun to his victim's head in his demand for sex. This is in court documents. But his history as a predator goes right back to the beginning of his career. Stay away. http://caselaw.canada.globe24h.com/0/0/ontario/court-of-appeal-for-ontario/2005/10/13/r-v-archer-2005-36444-on-ca.shtml

  4. Sorry but I don't have the foggiest notion where he now lives. I know his picture was published years ago in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record (now Waterloo Region Record). Perhaps if you google his name you'll get either a picture or a reference to the Record story and picture.

  8. Yes, this man is a creep to say the least...he hides behind his bible and is an active member with much respect in his church ( or used to be) His priest would sit with him at the trials ( made me absolutely sick ) He is one to be warned about and yes he is a professional pedophile. He stalks his prey...earns their trust and does his thing. Yes many people and organizations enable this man...his family..his wife his kids...the school board..his church...it is endless. Im not sure where this creep is now, but I gaurentee he is still doing what he does...Im not sure how this man ( or others like him) can get away with this shit but he did and im sure still does...he robbed Mike of his childhood not to mention so much more...Ron Archer is dangerous on so many levels... he is an ass...a creep...a pedophile...he is a sick individual who we all need to keep away from our children...be warned.

  9. Mr. Schmidt: Firstly I am not happy in removing your comment. A good deal of it was honest, from the heart and informative. If this Blog permitted me to just strike out a few words that I feel could get either me or you sued then that's what I would have done rather than remove the whole thing. The offending words were in regards to two other people and allegations you made. You might be 100% correct in what you said, I simply have no knowledge of that situation. My wife and I were sued nearly twenty years ago for Libel and I assure you that even telling the truth doesn't get you out of years of court appearances and thousands upon thousands of dollars in legal/lawyer costs. Please feel free to post again but be careful about statements or allegations that haven't been proven in court. Thank you...Alan

  12. Ron Archer is a pedophile and convicted sex offender. He was active in my era through the 70s at Stanley Park Senior Public School. In 1991 it clicked with me that he was a sexual offender: Brown paper covering his classroom windows; Highly sexualized lesson content; His boys-only club; Closed-door meetings with one boy at a time in his guidance office, which was equipped with a bed.

I called the school board and tried to get someone to take me seriously. No one did, and I didn't know how to do anything more. So I didn't. I so wish I had been more unrelenting in trying to get the school board to listen. I had no idea what I was doing and no one seemed to care. I now know they already knew. It's what we might now call institutionalized abuse -- done with the tacit consent of management.

Michael Schmidt, I am so sorry you were his vicim too! And I so admire you for coming forward and telling your story. And enduring the horrible experience of testifying. The judge and jury took you seriously, which is often not the case (especially when the victim is a girl or young woman). Ron Archer is a terrible person, and the school board knew it 15 years earlier when I was his student. That a teacher known to be a sexual predator was given time and space to commit his crimes is unconscionable. That he was allowed to carry on this behaviour harming so many children for so many years is unforgivable.

He was an awful teacher, forcing students to carry desks around the postathon route (a half mile circle around the school grounds). He humiliated students constantly.

He used the classroom to groom his victims and desensitize them to highly sexualized conversations and behaviours. I was a pretty good kid, but he identified me as a future slut. And in guidance class, he taught us all the sexual positions. He drew them on the chalk board. (Wish I'd had my smart phone then.) His class was where I learned what sex is all about. His lessons and judgements stayed with me for years.

For your own peace of mind, I hope you can find a way forward. Frankly, I can't. All these years later (I'm talking 40 years later!) I am furious with Archer and the many teachers and administration who knew what he was doing to boys he was entrusted to care for.

Most worrisome now, he is still actively seeking out victims. Get the word out. You guys who encountered him at the gym, tell the gym who and what he is!!! And tell the police. Too many people for too long let this many get away with heinous crimes. Although I was just a kid, I include myself in this group. He has to be stopped.

    2. Anonymous June 2016. Mr Archer use to call me a slut too. He thought history at Wilmot Senior (junior high) in the very early 90s, and he had a full size teepee set up in the bush across the street where he would take us as a class and take some of the boys in small groups after school and on weekends. He also participated in gymnastics- he wasn't a gym teacher; but he taught/trained boys on the rings and parallel bars. He never assisted in co-ed or girl centric sports. His son, R(*) was actually in my grade 7 class and Ron never took his son with him to the bush with the other boys. It was really weird... I'm sorry he called you that. He did it to me too and it stuck with me for years. Still stings now. He was such a cruel and abusive man- truly!

  13. I remember he counselled the girls never to say no to a boy who asked you to dance or out on a date because " it took so much courage for a boy to ask you" that sort of advise in a school these days would get you fired fast!
He also called me a slut when I was 12 years old.

  15. Ron Archer was my grade 7 teacher at Sunnyside Public School in 1973-74. Before any of this abuse came to light in the media I would have described him as a renegade teacher. I actually didn’t dislike him at the time. Although, I was naive at the time, being in grade 7. Also, keeping in mind at that time the strap was still being administered by the principal and it wasn’t too uncommon for teachers to lose it and grab or strike a student. Kids of that time generally were not quick to think of themselves as victims. It would be more of “I had it coming to me” mindset. But some kids were clearly from troubled homes and were likely already suffering some abuse or neglect at home. My grade 7 class had more than its fair share of trouble making boys. Mr. Archer would discipline by saying “give me 10 boy” (push-ups), then in some cases struck the boy’s buttocks with a pointer each time they rose up. If he felt the class was lacking energy he would have us go out and run around the track or he would open the class windows in the winter. I do remember us being encouraged to shower after gym class, which was a new thing. But just assumed at the time it was normal. Archer had this kind of cowboy persona. He rode horses, tall, tanned. He ran a canoe camp in the summers with another teacher and invited students. My best friend (too this day) attended but he didn’t report any problems with Archer there. No issues to my knowledge on the Camp Ambassador overnight school trip. This is basically my account. I never had any feeling of being a target. Perhaps coming from a solid home, I didn’t fit the type of victim. I did see Archer a couple times at a local gym in the years after his jail time. And not far from Sunnyside. I felt pretty creeped out and didn’t approach him.
