FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPEALS SOLITARY CONFINEMENT RULING



And no they aren't appealing a ruling approving solitary confinement; they are appealing a ruling by the B.C. Supreme Court which struck down indefinite solitary confinement as being cruel, inhumane and can lead to severe psychological trauma. In other words its' use is counter productive as it can make either bad or mentally ill persons much worse. The story is on the front page of today's Waterloo Region Record and is titled "Federal government to fight solitary confinement ruling". The B.C. Civil Liberties Assoc'n as well as the John Howard society had gone to the courts to try and have solitary confinement ruled unconstitutional. Prior to this an Ontario court had ruled that administrative solitary confinement longer than five days was unconstitutional however otherwise it did not violate constitutional rights. The B.C. Civil Liberties Assoc'n have stated that currently prisoners continue to spend weeks, months and even years in small cells without human contact.

    About time it's just dissapionting our canadain human rights had no interest in joing the fight in the courts for the rights of criminals they say when a criminal goes to jail they loose all there rights.Not true inmates have more rights than one thinks our criminals get 3 meals a day free room and board .while our seniors in Canada have to struggle to eat once a day.Thres been many deaths linked to solitary confinement hundreds if not thousands.We have human beings begging for medical attention who get ignored all night and to no surprise in the morning there found dead .its happened in Beaver creek and many institutions.That's criminal ignoring medical attention by dieing inmated. It's criminal to deprive the nessesity to life and deny medical attention .If inmate gets a tooth infection face swells up he's denied pain killers penicillin for weeks and up to months as I was clearly informed how one young man couldn't even eat face puffed out like the elephant man .Clearly needs to be slot of changes and our laws updated so criminals in jails have the basic right to medical attention and basic right to life.Presently our systems not rehabilitating as our system is supposed to be doing its ignoring And the sick part is the prison guards just laugh and joke about inmates as they lay dieing or lay in pain .If you cage someone up in solitary thats not rehabilitation no wonder there's so many repeat offenders
